Will my niche work on Pinterest?
Never once did I ask “will my niche work on Instagram” when I started by business back in 2019.
Like a Queen Bee wannabe no questions were asked before following the other Home Organizers. I recently met several at a conference and they all were using Instagram as their #1 platform so…
I copied them.
Channeling Mean Girls, Cady Heron vibes, I treated Instagram like army pants and flip flops.
I assumed it would work for me.
And it did.
BUT if I had asked the same question about Pinterest, I’d have the power of a search engine at my back helping me blow past my competition.
Thankfully two years ago I did ask the question, will my niche work on Pinterest, and the result was nothing less than exponential growth on Pinterest growing from 31 to 17K followers in 43 days.
That explosive growth continued on to over 270K followers on Pinterest.
In this post I’ll help answer this question for you so that you can be an outlier, not a lemming as it relates to Pinterest marketing.

Pre-work Questions to Ask
Does your niche content violate Pinterest policies?
Not all interests and niches are a good fit for Pinterest.
There are specific interests that violate Pinterest policies (based on advertising guidelines). The list of Pinterest prohibited content is quite long and you can access it here.
As a beginner to Pinterest marketing, ads on Pinterest may not be on your radar, but you can use the advertising guidelines as a guide to identify topics and niches that are prohibited content.
- Adult and nudity content
- Clickbait
- Drugs and paraphernalia
- Endangered Species and live animals
- Illegal products and services
- Counterfeit goods
- Political Campaigning
- Sensitive Content – offensive or profane
- Tobacco
- Unacceptable business practices
- Weapons and explosives
How many Pinterest users are there?

Do you have a visual niche?
Alternatively, infographics do very well on Pinterest as image repins and saves because they offer so much valuable information. Below are examples of these two types of content. The key is to creatively share information heavy content in a visual manner.
What is the objective for using Pinterest for business?
The final pre-work question to ask is what is the objective for using Pinterest for business.
When there is an alignment between your business objective and the social platform you are planning on using to market your business, this is a good indication that the platform is a good choice for you and your business.
For many business owners, social media is used to capture new audiences and to introduce discoverability of your brand.
Pinterest is at the top of the marketing funnel so it’s an ideal platform if brand awareness is a business objective.
Another popular business objective is multiple traffic sources to your website.
Pinterest also excels in this area because it has the unique functionality where each and every Pinterest pin can be linked to a URL that drives traffic to your content outside of the Pinterest platform.

Other questions that frequently get asked related to Pinterest niches are:
- Do you need to niche down on Pinterest?
- Can you have multiple niches on one Pinterest account?
To explain both questions I’ll share the pros and cons of each while sharing real life examples to learn from.
Do you need to niche down on Pinterest?
Niching down on Pinterest might feel a tiny bit restrictive like choosing one thing you’d pick to eat for the rest of your life if you were stuck on a deserted island.
My response: loaded veggie pizza.
Even this hypothetical question can be anxiety inducing because you can’t just pick one thing.
Benefits of niching down on Pinterest
While selecting one niche for content creation might feel limiting, it can also provide much needed structure and provide welcomed content boundaries.
I know for me, the idea of creating content on any and everything feels very overwhelming and I thrive creatively when faced with some constraints.
When you create a Pinterest account and create content on one singlar niche you benefit because Pinterest learns about your account faster and has an easier time indexing your pins.
You benefit in this situation because it takes less time for Pinterest to distribute your pins to the right audiences. This time savings translates into a shorter runway between discovering a new brand and converting a sale.
Challenges of niching down on Pinterest
On the flip side, sticking to one niche forever and ever could get a little boring. Your audience may need repetition, but saying the same thing, even differently, can get stale and drag down your creative spirit.
Even if you absolutely love your business and niche, bordem can creep in causing you to push pause on your content marketing strategy.
In this situation I highly encourage performing a mind mapping exercises to identify complimentary niches or topics that would align with your primary content niche.
Introducing a secondary topic that pairs well with your content could sprinkle a fresh newness to your content strategy that you’re looking for.
For example, my home organization Pinterest account often addresses topics that align and are complimentary with home organization such as cleaning the home as well organizing your day and schedule for more productivity.

- Dog grooming
Benefits of multiple niches on Pinterest
I’ve already discussed the benefits of multiple niches from a content perspective in the question above. What benefits are there for using one Pinterest account for multiple unrelated niches?
Simplicity.
One Pinterest account and one log-in all connected to one scheduler makes it easier to manage your Pinterest account. The different niche content pins can be organized and separated by boards rather than by account.
Let’s talk money. There’s a financial benefit to keeping all the niches under one roof. One roof also means one domain and one claimed Pinterest account. Paying once rather than multiple times is a strong benefit making a good case for keeping multiple niches under one Pinterest account.
Challenges of multiple niches on Pinterest
But there are challenges to simplifying your multiple niches within one Pinterest account.
If you combine multiple unrelated niches under one singular domain, you also risk confusing Google and other search engines causing a downstream impact to your SEO ranking abilities. Lower ranking means lower views and this ultimately hampers content distribution.
From a financial perspective if you choose to separate your niches into different Pinterest accounts you incur the costs of multiple domains and even multiple pin schedulers.
Multiple niche case study
For example, I run two separate Pinterest accounts. One is dedicated to my home organization niche Tidy with SPARK, while the other is all about Pinterest marketing on Pin with SPARK.
This also means I run and manage two separate domains and two different schedulers for each Pinterest account.
Initially when I started the Pinterest marketing side of my business I chose to include my Pinterest marketing niche content within the umbrella of my Tidy with SPARK account.
At the time, simplicity and ease was my main business objective. Over time the decision to make things easier, hurt my content in different ways.
First, it took a really long time for Pinterest to understand that I had Pinterest Marketing content mixed in with home organization content even though I separated the pins through dedicated Pinterest boards.
The minimum time for Pinterest to understand my account and distribute my Pinterest Marketing content to the right people took 6 months and upwards to one full year. I took the risk of confusing Pinterest and my audience.
Only a small subset of my audience is interested in both home organization and Pinterest marketing content. This small percentage might not get confused about the unrelated niches, but the majority of my audience would be confused.
Multiple niche Summary
With the pros and cons laid out in this post there’s a lot to consider and weight in on the decision to bring multiple niches under one Pinterest account. The case study I shared is my personal experience and if I had to do it all over again, I would have done it the same way.
Why?
When you’re a small business owner wearing all the hats, simplicity is the sexiest thing in my business aside from having a steller Virtual Assistant or Office Manager that are a rock stars at their job.
For where I was at in my business at that point in time, it was the best decision for me. But you have the benefit of learning from my experience and can weigh all the necessary factors.
Simply put, you know better so you can do better.
